John the Wonder Kid...Before and After...

Sarasota ,FL Christmas vacation 2009.... Love this boy!

My son John is just a great kid with a heart of gold. I've always said he's like an old man trapped in a young boys body....I guess you could say he has an old sole and he's just a blessing to me!
Around Christmas we received a letter from the school stating that our son's weight for his height was over the 95th percentile and that he was considered obese. John's always been a little husky but over the summer I'd noticed he'd put on weight, especially when shopping for school clothes but didn't think it'd been so much. At the start of January John told his Dad he wanted to play baseball this Spring. Dave thought to motivate John he'd tell him that he'd have to get into shape 1st and John agreed. A few weeks earlier Dave had started a pod cast called Couch Potato to 5k, that he had learned about from my friend Jayna (whose has lost 75lbs...so proud of her!)

Dave was having good success with it, so he down loaded it for John and he was off running. After about a week of running I figured what John's calorie count should be for his age and height, then we got him a note book and he started tracking and measuring out all his foods, which he is still doing. Today John has reached his goal weight...He has lost 20 lbs, his starting weight was at 125 and is now 105. As a parent there's nothing better then having your son come up, kiss you on the check and say, "Thanks Mom for helping me lose weight!" I tell you.... it's the greatest feeling in the world!

Thanks for the shout out! (actually I'm now closing in on 90 lbs lost!). John is INCREDIBLE. He looks healthy and happy, and oh so handsome. I'm so proud of you for handling what could be such a delicate parenting situation with such style and grace. You obviously let him know that you love him and encourage him to make the change for himself- and it worked wonders. Having been a heavy kid I know how hard that is for a parent to try to do (my parents were not as successful as you). You must be so proud of him!

You & Dave have been such incredible examples for John & I second what Jayna has said about how beautifully you handled this. Being a gentle form of encouragement to inspire him not only to lose weight but build an active lifestyle that has made him healthier and, quite obviously, much happier in the process!

Kudos to you & Dave both for raising such awesome kids! You certainly have a son to be VERY proud of! And congrats to John for all his hard work and perseverance. Dropping 20 pounds, as we both know, is no small feat!

This post totally made my day & I just wanted you to know that. :)

Thanks girls for all the warm and kind words! Being a fat kid, I too know how fragile their little egos can be and knowing what I had gone through I didn't want history to repeat it's self. I think for him what made the big difference was he really wanted it. I've been working on Nicole...gently of course...I've at least gotten her to give up the sugared cokes. She doesn't like diet so she has been drinking water only. I just wish she wasn't such a picky eater. I can get her to eat some fruits, she'll only eat chicken and the only vegetable I can get into her is lettuce and roasted potatoes. The only way I can get veggies in her is to sneak them into muffins or breads. I plan on making the beet bread here soon and hope she might eat it and I want to do a chocolate zucchini muffin as well...it's hard when their so darn picky!
